What is hockey sense, really?

Coaches call it hockey sense, or hockey IQ — the players who always seem to be a half-step ahead, who make the pass before the lane closes, who take away an option before it even opens. It looks like instinct, but it's built from a specific set of underlying perception skills: peripheral awareness, predictive tracking of moving objects, recognizing patterns and anomalies in formations, dividing attention across multiple threats, filtering deception, and making the right read under real time pressure.

Those are trainable skills, independent of on-ice reps — which is exactly what Project Intuition's 10 modules are built to isolate and drill.

10 modules, 10 perception skills

Each module targets one specific cognitive skill that shows up in a real hockey read. Difficulty adapts automatically to your performance, and your progress is tracked per module.

Flow Field

Kinematic inference — track moving targets after they go dark, then tap from memory.

Phantom Pass

Pre-motor intent — read the telegraph cue and identify the receiver before the pass happens.

Temporal Echo

Spatial transit memory — recall which zones moving objects passed through after they disappear.

Shadow Court

Divided attention — track an open attacker while reacting instantly to a possession change.

Ghost Line

Predictive velocity — project a hidden trajectory forward and tap the true intercept point.

Pattern Break

Anomaly detection — spot the one element in a formation that deviates from the pattern.

Pressure Clock

Decision speed — find the open read among attackers and defenders before the clock runs out.

Phantom Sequence

Sequence chunking — memorize and recall an order of events after they're scrambled.

Deception Filter

Deception inhibition — tell a genuine tell from a fake lean and commit to the real side.

Ice Read

Situational integration — read a full ice scene and choose the highest-value play.

Personalized to how you think

Before your first module, a short questionnaire — general-perception questions plus a self-assessment across six cognitive skills — identifies your natural brain type (reactor, mapper, analyst, or sentinel) and your position. That profile drives which module gets recommended first, highlights your strongest and weakest skills on your dashboard, and calibrates training priority to how your particular brain already processes the game — not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Optional: enable Neural Audio from the dashboard for a focus-tone layer designed to run underneath training — a steady low-arousal baseline plus binaural beats (best with headphones) tuned to the rest and active-tracking phases of each round. It's an optional add-on, not required to train effectively.

Frequently asked questions

What is hockey sense?

Hockey sense (sometimes called hockey IQ) is the ability to read a play before it fully develops — anticipating where the puck, teammates, and opponents will be a half-second from now, rather than reacting to where they already are.

Can hockey sense and hockey IQ be trained?

Hockey sense is built from underlying perception skills — peripheral awareness, predictive tracking, pattern recognition, divided attention, and fast decision-making under time pressure. Each of those component skills can be isolated and drilled independently of on-ice reps, which is what Project Intuition's modules are designed to do.

How does Project Intuition work?

10 short, game-like training modules, each targeting one specific perception skill. Difficulty adapts automatically to your performance, and progress is tracked per module so you can see which skills are strongest and which need work.

Who is Project Intuition for?

Hockey players at any level looking to sharpen the perceptual and decision-making side of their game — the skills coaches often describe as "hockey sense" or "hockey IQ" but rarely have a structured way to actually train off the ice.

Is training personalized to me?

Yes. A short quiz before your first module identifies your natural brain type and playing position, which drives your recommended training order and highlights your strongest and weakest skills — training isn't one-size-fits-all.

What is Neural Audio?

An optional audio layer (headphones recommended) that plays underneath training: a steady focus-tone baseline plus binaural beats tuned to each round's rest and active-tracking phases. It's available from the dashboard and is entirely optional.

Is it free?

Yes, Project Intuition is free to train with.
